Alexis May, M.A.

Ms. May joined the team at the DBT Centre of Vancouver in June 2011. She received her Master's degree in Clinical Psychology in 2010 from the University of British Columbia, where she is currently completing her doctoral degree under the supervision of Dr. E. David Klonsky. She received her B.A. in Psychology and Neuroscience from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, where her research focused on cognitive behavioral therapy for bulimia and binge eating disorder. Her current research focuses on suicidal thinking and behaviors as well as emotion regulation. Specifically, Ms. May is interested in factors that differentiate individuals who think about suicide from those who act on those thoughts and have suicide attempts. In addition, she is currently researching the functions of and motivations for suicidal behavior. Ms. May has received fellowships from UBC and the Simons Foundation to support her research. She has presented her research at conferences throughout North America. Ms. May also worked as the administrative coordinator for a non-profit suicide prevention organization in California. Clinically, Ms. May has received training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) as applied to a number of psychological difficulties, including BPD, self-injury, suicidality, depression, and anxiety.
